Room To Grow: The Importance of Perspective in Business
It’s easy to get bogged down in the day-to-day running of your business, especially when you’re in demand. Keeping clients happy, managing your team and paying the bills tends to push longer term planning into the back seat.
Marketing is one such area that often lacks the attention it deserves. We often hear “I don’t have time”, “I don’t need one, I have plenty of work” or even; “that stuff is just for big businesses, it’s not relevant to me”.
A well-thought out and regularly revisited marketing plan is a roadmap for business success.
We know that a well-executed marketing plan keeps you on track, enables you to monitor return on your marketing spend and maintains competitive advantage. Essentially, it also keeps your sales pipeline full and ensures you are prepared to respond to any changes in your marketplace. So, regardless of the size of your business, it is an essential activity.
With this in mind, we’ve put together a three-point planning process to keep you moving in the right direction.
Step 1: Set aside some time to work on your business and to review the bigger picture.
Whether you’re working alongside a marketing agency like ours or developing a plan in-house, giving yourself space to think will ensure you get it right first time. A change of scenery can often work wonders for this – or simply dedicating some thinking time during your daily commute.
Step 2: Get to grips with some basic questions and regularly review your marketplace.
Where are you now? What are your biggest challenges? Who are your customers and how well are you understanding and meeting their needs? What are your competitors up to? Any marketplace rumblings should also come to the fore, enabling you to prepare a timely and suitable response to threats and to benefit from opportunities.
Step 3: Where do you want to be – and when?
Fast forward 1, 3 and 5 years into the future – what does your dream business look like? Marketing objectives will fall into place and provide a motivational vision for your team.
Big plans but no cash to implement them? A longer term plan steers the controlled growth of your business. With a longer timeframe to work with you can prioritise activity that will deliver the results you need to make your most ambitious milestones achievable.
Once you know why, the how is easy!
You now have a clear picture of your current business and marketplace situation, combined with a set of objectives - which makes the planning of marketing activities a doddle!
